With an emphasis on logical and ethical learning, philosophy students view the world and its complex problems through an analytical perspective. They attempt to answer important questions: Does God exist? What makes an action right or wrong? Should people obey an unjust law? Do people have free will, or are actions predetermined? As a philosophy major at Indiana State, you will ponder these and other significant questions.

Indiana State's knowledgeable professors will assist you in designing a personalized plan of inquiry in philosophy topics based on your career goals and interests. Faculty in the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies regularly publish research papers and present at conferences. They will help you broaden your cultural perspectives in research, explore options for a second major, find internships, and plan a study-abroad program for firsthand cultural experiences.

What You'll Learn in the Philosophy Program

The BA in philosophy addresses a wide variety of topics in philosophy, including ethics, logic, ancient and modern philosophy, multidisciplinary studies, theory of knowledge, and metaphysics. You will also select elective philosophy courses that align with your specific career goals, including business ethics, medical ethics, philosophy of law, philosophy of science, and political philosophy.

An ethics internship program will enhance your learning experience with the practical application of skills and concepts. This internship allows you to work in the business community on a mutually agreed upon and beneficial area of business or medical ethics. The internship will be approved by your faculty.

Your program will conclude with a seminar on multidisciplinary studies. The course introduces you to the theoretical and methodological study of multidisciplinary learning. You will also complete a major research project, usually a written paper.

You can complete your philosophy bachelor’s degree program in four years of full-time study.

Transfer Credit

Indiana State University accepts credit from regionally accredited colleges and universities within the United States, and from selected schools located outside the United States. Credit also may be granted for military training and experience. Previously earned college credit can be applied toward completion of the program per Indiana State's transfer guidelines.

Our Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy program prepares you for careers or professional studies in law, business, government, medicine, journalism, marketing, ministry/religion, research writing, nonprofit organizations, and more. Our graduates find employment in these areas or continue their education in graduate school or law school.  

H2: Career Possibilities for Theater Majors      A bachelor’s degree in theater from Indiana State prepares you for a career in professional theater as an actor, director, playwright, or designer. Many of our graduates also pursue graduate studies in theater.
