Learn from Our Talented Faculty

Indiana State's instructors are passionate about art and education, and our small class sizes enable you to receive individualized instruction and mentorship from them. Our faculty actively create artwork in their chosen media, including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, and printmaking.

Your professors will guide your experience on field trips, supervise your student-teaching experiences, and provide you with instruction and resources for other hands-on learning activities.

Create Art in Our Art Studios

As an art education major, you will take classes in our 70,000-square-foot Fine Arts Building. The fully equipped facility houses graphic design and computer art studios, classrooms, a Media Realization Center, and an art education facility. You will also take art classes in designated studios for ceramics, drawing, painting, papermaking, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Our art studios are available to all art majors.

What You'll Learn in the Art Education All-Grade Program

The art education all-grade major provides a solid foundation in art education for all grade levels – high school, middle school, and elementary. You will identify major art styles, learn art history, demonstrate art skills in studio classes, create art projects, and develop effective teaching techniques to complete the art education all-grade teaching licensure.

As an art education major at Indiana State, you will build your theoretical understanding of art around these primary components:

The productive component, or studio area, teaches basic concepts, skills, and technical abilities.
The appreciative component, including aesthetics, art history, and art criticism, provides the philosophical, historical, and critical bases for studying art of the past and present.
The professional component features the comprehensive knowledge and abilities related to education in general and art education. This component is completed through classroom laboratory and clinical experience in local schools.

You will take classes in the Department of Art and Design and in the Bayh College of Education, and you will complete a foundation portfolio review during your sophomore year. In the course, you will document and submit a portfolio of work already completed in your core studio courses [Fundamentals of Drawing, Fundamentals of Two-Dimensional Design and Color, and Fundamentals of Three-Dimensional Design]. You will provide a reflective statement evaluating your work, and your faculty will provide feedback.

The Art Education All-Grade program concludes with a semester-long student teaching experience. The experience may be completed in a high school, middle school, or elementary school setting.

This program can be completed in four years of full-time study.

Transfer Credit

Indiana State University accepts credit from regionally accredited colleges and universities within the United States, and from selected schools located outside the United States. Credit also may be granted for military training and experience. Previously earned college credit can be applied toward completion of the program per Indiana State's transfer guidelines.

Career Possibilities for Art Education All-Grade Majors

Our graduates are qualified to take the State of Indiana licensing exam for teaching visual art education in K-12. Our students are also prepared to work at museums and other institutional educational programs, or to pursue graduate studies.
